Let’s Prove that America DOES believe in God?

November 14th, 2008

If you believe in God, I want to make you aware of an advertising campaign that will appear on Washington D.C. buses this season. To verify what you are reading, go to: http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/11/12/godless.holiday.ap/index.html?iref=mpstoryview – It’s available till 12/12/08, then it will be archived according to CNN

I thought a bit about how we can combat this kind of thinking. How can we, in a way that honors Christ, come against this advertising and really make a statement. Even CNN’s report says that 92% of all Americans believe in God, yet as believers we’re not really making a statement that would lead these humanists to believe the surveys.

So, here’s what I propose. If you believe in God, make it a point to be in church (any Bible based church anywhere) every Sunday from November 30 through Christmas including Christmas Eve. What? You can’t make it on Sunday Morning because you work. That’s OK!!! There are several congregations that still worship on Sunday evening, PLUS a few even have mid-week worship. It’s a bit harder to find, but it will be worth the effort.

It will take a lot of work to get the word out. I’m going to ask you to forward this to everyone in America you can think of (if it happens to spread around the world and works like I think it could, all the better) Send it to those who go to church every week and those who’ve never been there, those that you know believe in God and those that you aren’t sure. Additionally, copy it and send it as a letter to the editor in your paper (reword it so it sounds like you!). That way those who don’t have e-mail will have a chance to get it. Plus, print it out and give it to those who you know don’t have e-mail or don’t read e-mails much.

The stats I found online say that only 25% of Americans attend church every Sunday and another 15%-25% attend somewhat regularly. Can we take this 25% to 75% during the Christmas season? I believe we can! I know there are buttons out there that say, “It’s OK to wish me Merry Christmas” and beautiful signs that say “Keep Christ in Christmas” and “Jesus is the Reason for the Season.” Keep all of those out in the public’s view, scatter them in your lawn and on your jacket! But I think a bigger statement to these who are doing the kind of advertising that’s going to be on DC buses would be to ACTUALLY SEE PEOPLE PUT THEIR FAITH INTO ACTION.

If you are a church leader and see significant increases in attendance, e-mail me the results by Christmas day at lynne@lynnemodranski.com. Tell me what your normal attendance is and what your December attendance is. If I get enough response, I’ll send the results to the national media. If no one else picks it up, I believe FOX will. But I have to have outstanding numbers to report. We have to make a HUGE statement. $40,000 worth of advertising HUGE. Perhaps if it backfires on them, they’ll stop this kind of God denouncing stuff. We can do this. Don’t let me down . . . WAIT . . . NO . . . Don’t let God down!

America’s Future

October 30th, 2008

I’m still thinking about what Jeremiah has to say about Israel and how relevant it is to America today.  Again, I encourage you to read Isaiah and Jeremiah inserting America for Israel and Washington for Jerusalem.  Today I ready Jeremiah 3 and 4.  If you don’t have time or the desire to read all of Isaiah and Jeremiah, just read Jeremiah 4.

America . . . a nation founded belief and trust in God.  But I truly beleive that America has turned her back on Him.  America is now the unfaithful wife, the prostitute.  Not just our governement, but the majority of her individuals.  We cry, “Don’t remove ‘In God We Trust’” and we get irate when someone even mentions excluding “One Nation Under God.”  Yet do we live as though we Trust in God or are a nation under His control?

We’re about to elect a President, and if we are very fortunate we will have a man who is the “lesser of two evils” as our highest elected official.  It seems to have been that way the last few elections.  Is that what we really want?  Or perhaps it’s what we’ve really asked God for without even knowing it.  When Israel cried out to God for a ruler, their Soveriegn King gave them exactly what they asked for.  He warned them through Samuel (I Samuel 8:5-22 & 10:19).  He said, “Warn them . . . what the president who will reign over them will do. . .  He will take your sons and daughters and make them serve.  He will take a portion of your income and give it to his officials and attendants. . . When that day comes you will cry out for relief from the president you have chosen, and the Lord will not answer you on that day.”   God would rule over this nation if she truly wanted to be a nation under God; however, we’ve chosen to let men rule over us, blame them for the state of our nation and then complain that we are in the less than blessed state we are in today.

America, will you turn back to God?  I don’t mean just start attending church (although that would be a nice start if you were to find group of followers that truly honored His Son), I mean begin to completely commit to your Creator.  I’m talking about becoming a nation who completely relies on the Maker of the heavens and the earth.  America has prostituted herself long enough to other nations, big companies and the love of money.

In her youth, America was a nation that followed and loved God.  George Washington would not be a King because he understood the warnings of Samuel, but in the 21st century our entire political system has become our “king.”  God warned we’d pay a king 10% of our income, but if you add it up, you’ll find the amount of taxes coming out of your pay every week is closer to 20% and maybe more if you’re self-employed, single or in a higher tax bracket.

How long will America refuse to yield to the warnings of Isaiah and Jeremiah.  Wise historians have told us that you can either choose to learn from history or repeat it.  America is on her way to repeating the history of the first nation founded by God.   If we continue on this path, we can count on being overcome by our enemies.  That is what happened to ancient Israel.    Are you ready, America?

Are we prepared to be under the control of our evil enemies or would we rather be ruled by a gracious and loving Father?  It’s completely up to us, just as ancient Israel held their future in their hands, so we hold our future.  Which will you choose?   Will we begin to bow to Jesus Christ, the One and Only Living God, or will we continue to serve the gods of money, politics, stocks, jobs, sports and prosperity?   Will we choose Life or death?  (Deuteronomy 29 & 30)

I choose Life . . . me and my house . . . we will serve the Lord

Israel/America

October 27th, 2008

I’ve made it into Jeremiah.  The prophet of gloom he is often called.  And it’s no wonder.  I read chapters 1 & 2 today.  Chapter 2 is pretty clear regarding God’s opinion of Israel during the reign of Josiah.  But read it again.  Similar to Isaiah, substitute America for Israel, Jacob, Zion, Jerusalem or anything that you know means the people of Israel.

God says, “I remember the devotion of your youth.”  Do you think He says that now to America?  Does He remember 400+ years ago when people came from Europe to escape religious persecution?  They were dedicated to following God and came here to this land so they could worship Him in truth instead of the lie that the throne was forcing on them.   Does God look at America and say, “I remember when.”?  Not the “I remember” of those who think they remember the “good old days,” but an “I remember” when worshipping God was the center of this country’s existence, back when the only reason someone would come to such a crude and unrefined place was to have an opportunity to worship.  Does he remember when people loved Him so much they were willing to cross a scary ocean, face disease, death and the prospect of the unknown just so they could bring their children up in a place where God could be glorified without fear of persecution?

Jump ahead now 500 years.  What does God see now?  He sees people “remembering when” all right.  Remember when that steel mill was up and running.  Remember when kids were innocent.  Remember when . . . remember when.  These folks have a new god, the god of the past.  They spend so much time focused on what was, they’ve forgotten what God called them to be.

God says, “What fault did you find in me?”  How can we answer?  Why did America as a whole abandon the truth about our Creator.  Oh, I know there are pockets of those who still worship God in truth.  The Bible calls that a remnant.  What about the rest of America?  What fault have they found in God?  Why would they trade the worship of an Almighty Provider, for the worship of worthless idols?  Yet, that’s what America has done.  The only difference is our idols are “American Idols,” politicians, movie stars, comedians, sports personalities and the like.  We put their faces and numbers on our clothing in much the same way as we put a cross on a chain around our neck.  America has minimized our Savior to a trinket and given Him the same classification as our TV hero.  Even Israel didn’t completely give up on God, they merely made Him one of their many gods.

America/ancient Israel . . . who can really tell the difference.  “Consider, America, how evil and bitter it is for us when we turn our backs on the Lord our God and don’t stand in awe of Him” (Jeremiah 2:19b) We still have time . . . YOU still have time.  Choose for yourselves this day who you will serve . . .

The Chosen People of God

October 18th, 2008

I have most recently been reading the Old Testament and considering the exiled Israel nation. For years it has been my belief that the 21st Century church should read the prophecies of the Old Testament as if written with them in mind. Because Christ tells us we are “grafted” in to the nation of Israel (see Romans), as I read Isaiah, I continually see the church and often most specifically America. When I read Israel, I see America. When I read Jerusalem and Zion (the holy cities of Israel), I see Christ’s Church.

The nation of Israel felt deserted by God more than once. Of course, it was always because they had turned away from Him, not because He left them. They continually turned away, cried out and turned back. Over and over again they repeated this cycle until God finally allowed their enemies to take them into exile in a foreign country.

As I read Isaiah, I see so many similarities for the church today. The church plays at following Christ, much like the Israelites claimed to be the chosen people of God while they turned their attention to the gods of the nations around them. The church is declining and can’t understand why. Watch the Israelites lose battles, face drought and famine and have their lives devastated by their enemies wondering where God is.
It’s time for the church to cry out to God again. I invite you to read the book of Isaiah with 21st Century eyes. For instance, today I read Isaiah 62. Here is the interpretation that I saw as I read:

The church is now a grafted in part of Zion and Jerusalem. So, for the sake of His Church, the Lord will not keep silent. He will fight for her until her righteousness shines like the dawn and her salvation is as bright as a blazing fire. Everyone around her will witness her righteousness and God will give her a new name (Unless, I wonder, if CHURCH is the new name He has given to Israel, Zion & Jerusalem) The church is God’s crown of splendor in the hand of our Creator. She will no longer be deserted or desolate. Instead she will be Christ’s delight and His bride.

In turn, the leaders of the church should not rest until Christ’s Kingdom is established in her midst. Her leaders should cry out to God and not give Him any peace until the church is the praise of the earth. God has promised to bless His church. He has sworn that our enemies will not win and that Christ will bring the church’s reward. Prepare the way for the people, they are coming back. Remove all the barriers to God’s place. Put up a flag so the exiled know where God’s city is. All those who enter will be called God’s Holy People.

What DOES God want?

September 29th, 2008

That’s a question a lot of people ask . . . What does God want from us? What do I have to do to get His attention? What do I need to do to get Him to do what I want?

Well, first, we can’t manipulate God. And we always have His attention. Scripture is full of examples of those two facts. But today I read Isaiah (yes, I’m still in Isaiah) 58 and it’s amazing how CLEAR God is about what He expects of His people. (not necessarily about what He expects of those who are NOT called His people - I think maybe it’s because He doesn’t expect ANYTHING of those who are not His people.)

He does not expect His people to follow man made rules. Not even those rules that man created out of scripture. In Isaiah 58 God said He was TIRED of all the fasting the Israelites were doing. They fasted and then lived anyway they please and expected God to bless them because of their fast.

He says in this chapter that if we want to do what pleases Him, what gets His attention, then we need to forget the ritual (like going to church just to go to church or taking communion or getting baptized because we think that’s what will save us). He’s not interested in the ritual, He’s interested in how much we loved someone besides ourselves. He’s not impressed with our appearance of “righteousness,” but in how we look at others. He’s doesn’t care how many rules we follow, but in how much we follow HIM.

THEN . . . after we’ve been what God wants us to be . . . THEN he will pour out His blessing on us. He’ll give us everything we need and more, He’ll take care of those things that we think He doesn’t even see.

Think about it, why should we expect God’s justice and grace to fall on us, when we don’t pass it along to others.

God is Bigger than the Boogie Man

August 22nd, 2008

I’m still reading Isaiah. Beginning in Isaiah 40 and reading through chapter 42, I can’t help thinking, “God is big!” I wrote in my journal:

God is much bigger than we can imagine.
God is Big - He is in Control
God will rescue - He will save
God will bless - He will turn desolation into blessing
God has sent His Servant to be our covenant
God will not forsake those who follow Him.

That’s just a synopsis of those chapters, but it made me wonder:
“Lord, I believe all that to be true, and as I read on in Chapter 42, ‘Are my eyes blind like Israel? Are my ears deaf like your chosen people?’”

Is God in the midst of rescuing, so I don’t really see it? In the midst of the desolation is it too difficult for me to see the restoration, the blessing? Is the reason that it’s hard to hear God because I’m not following Him as closely as I should? Am I too far away? Or is it the din of the sin and tragedy of this world that keeps the voice of God seem so distant?

I need answers . . . I need to see the hand of God moving . . .

Do on Do & Rule on Rule

July 21st, 2008

Isaiah 27 & 28

This prophecy in Isaiah speaks volumes to the church today.  Isaiah prophesied that so-called priests and prophets would become drunkards and stumble.  He said that they would make a list of “do’s” for the people and that religion would become rules.  In Isaiah’s day these words in verse 28:10 that have been translated into English were meaningless jibberish, perhaps a symbol of the words coming from the mouths of the prophets and priests.  Is it more than just coincidence, though, that these words of jibberish were translated into words that more than describe the state of the church?

Why does the church want to live in a world of rules and do’s and don’ts?  God said that He wanted to give us a place of rest, a place where we could get away from the world and just bask in His presence.  No rules required.  Fact is in Chapter 27, God said that he would welcome even the briars and thorns if they would only come to Him.

The good news is God has laid the stone in Zion.  The precious cornerstone has come.  Jesus Christ is alive and waiting to be the one in whom we trust.  “the one who trusts will never be dismayed.”  Christ annuls our covenant with death.  The agreement we have with death does not stand when we put our trust in Him.  He takes away the lies, He brings only truth.  Jesus has no “rules,” no “do’s”.   He only asks that we follow.  Find the path that He is walking and walk down that same path.  He’ll guide us every step of the way.

The problem is that the church has believed the lie for so long, she has clung to the “rules” for protection and power, she doesn’t realize the freedom that awaits in trusting the “foundation” that God Himself laid.  The church is living like ancient Israel, “a lie” is her “refuge,” a “falsehood” is her “hiding place.”

It’s time for the church of the 21st Century to stand up and be different.  It’s time to abandon the “rules” and follow the path, throw out the list of “do’s” and stand on the solid foundation.   Justice is the only measuring line, righteousness is the only plumb line.  And the name of Justice and Righteousness is Jesus Christ.

America

July 12th, 2008

I’ve journaled for years. I have books and books of things I’ve written. I really like to write. So, why not start a blog. This won’t get too juicy or personal, that’s not my style, but you will see things like my thoughts and rants, lyrics and poetry. I’ll start with something I wrote about 3 weeks ago that I’ve been looking for a place to publish. Why not here first?

This morning as I was praying and reading scripture, I had an insight on America. For years I’ve believed that much of the writings in the books of the prophets are now spoken to the people of America. Not that we are God’s chosen people over and above the Israelites, but that somehow we received God’s favor on the day of our inception because, much like Israel, we are a nation (and probably only the 2nd such nation) founded on the belief that God is the creator of the Universe and deserves our worship. We were founded believing that men (and women) should have the opportunity to worship in a way that is most meaningful to them without fear of punishment or prejudice.

Being founded on these kinds of principles, we, like Israel, have had an enemy since the beginning. Satan, the devil, is our enemy. He is the mastermind behind all the so-called human “masterminds.” He has attacked America since the beginning, but America has always stood strong because her roots are deeply imbedded in the belief that Christ wants liberty and justice for all. Even most Americans who say they don’t believe have a core value system that includes morals based on principles introduced by a Judeo-Christian belief system.

Our enemy has been working fervently throughout the history of America to bring it down, and finally after 200+ years, he may have found our weakness. He tried introducing false religions that allowed Jesus Christ to be a figurehead but not a Savior. He fooled some, but he couldn’t turn our country away from God. Darwin and others would like to take credit for the theory of evolution. They would never have believed they were merely pawns in the hands of America’s greatest enemy. For some years, I’m sure the enemy believed he may have finally found the thing that would cause enough doubt to turn the country away from her creator; however, the truth was and is being revealed and the case for evolution becomes more bizarre everyday.

Looking back I see that as the enemy began to see the crumble of his scientific theory, and especially as the evil of slavery, prejudice and inequality was finally beginning to be revealed for the lie that it is, he began to plant a new idea, an idea that very similar to slavery. It was an idea that might once and for all cause America to devalue human life and the ultimate creation of God enough to have them turn away from the army that has been protecting them since those first ships set sail to free themselves from religious oppression.

Yes, it was the enemy who whispered in someone’s ear the first time, “Go ahead and kill the baby, it’s not really a life yet.” It was the enemy who told a son struggling to care for his elderly parents, “The marvel of modern medicine, just turn a knob and they’ll go to sleep.” The enemy reasoned if humans could be convinced they had the power of God, they would turn away from and against Him.

But a shaken America stood firm. We continued to value life enough to limit abortion and euthanasia. We saw the travesty of people treated unfairly in countries far away and sent troops to fight the ungodly injustice. Today I thought about the 9-11 terrorist activities. I wonder if the enemy thought he had finally found that one thing America worshipped enough to turn her back on her Savior? Was Satan surprised when instead this still very young country in the grand scheme of things actually turned TO God in the midst of the aftermath?

And now it would seem Lucifer’s been relatively quiet for the past several years. Perhaps he’s been plotting and scheming, trying to find a way to convince America to abandon her Father and denounce her only source of strength. As I was praying, I wondered if during these last few years he finally found it. He let it sneak in. It didn’t take much work. He finally found the one thing that Americans will worship more than their Creator. It’s the one thing Jesus warned us about . . . the love of money.

I know many will say that they don’t really love money. If they had money they’d do more for those less fortunate, they wouldn’t hoard it for themselves. Yet, our restaurants are busier today than ever before. Gas prices are at an all time high, yet do we really drive less? We fight for the raise in minimum wage, we save for Christmas and vacations. After all, we deserve them. We pay way too much for sporting events and concerts. We sign our kids up for every imaginable extra-curricular activity. We don’t worship money, but do Americans worship all the things money can buy? Are the price of gas, the cost of health care, the rising cost of living and the failing economy finally going to be what proves America can’t stand strong against the attacks of the enemy? Has he found our weak spot? For the first time in more than 200 years, has he discovered what will make us fall?

What do you worship? America’s enemy wants us to worship anything but God. He’d like us to live high as long as we don’t have faith in Jesus Christ. Does that mean we can’t have nice things? I believe we can. I think Christ wants us to have nice things, but when we get so caught up in the things that we lose focus on the One who can win this war for us, we begin to tear down the fortress that Christ and the armies of God have fought so hard to build to protect us.

America has turned from “freedom to worship” to “freedom of worship.” This country was built on the foundation of the God inspired scripture and the desire to serve and worship our Creator and Savior freely without strings and without rules. As long as America has remained rooted to those principles, she has stood strong. But I’m beginning to be afraid for this nation that I believe was once God’s second “chosen people.” The enemy is gaining ground. We’ve allowed sports, jobs, boats and lawns to tear us away from Sunday worship. We’ve turned away from “In God we Trust” and begun to trust the man made object we engraved these precious words upon.

America, we are still free to worship. The basic premise of God’s provision in Genesis is our freedom to worship Him. One of the great things about America is that her founders understood that God doesn’t want to force us to worship Him. Our Maker’s greatest desire is that we choose to worship Him, we prefer to make Christ first in our lives, we embrace the chance to live a full, complete life within His will, His miraculous, marvelous and “bigger than our imagination can take us” will.

So, I wonder today . . . who will America worship? Who will we serve? Don’t forget if you serve yourself, you still serve the enemy . . . after all, that’s what he’s working toward. If he can just get our focus off God, he doesn’t care what we focus ON! We can argue all we want to about troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. We can fight about the economy, gas prices and all those political questions. But all of this means nothing if we continue to ignore the real enemy.

How ‘bout it America? Are you ready to stand up and fight this battle or has the enemy finally won? Has he embarked on his last strategic strike? You get to determine the outcome. Choose for yourself who you will worship, who you will serve. As for me and my house . . . we choose Christ!
